Ptex 3D Texturing to Revolutionize Game Development

July 31, 2010 in News

Prepare to get Geeky. The gorgeous environments, vehicles, and characters that populate our videogames are typically created through two processes: modeling and texturing. Modeling refers to the creation of polygons to shape an object, like a city or a chainblade. But texturing involves breaking those polygons up and wrapping them with a 2D image, not unlike your normal JPEG files. The process can be tedious and frustrating, but a technological breakthrough called Ptex aims to revolution the process forever.

Why Multiplayer Trophies Should Not Be Required

July 29, 2010 in Editorial

Trophies were the greatest godsend for PS3 owners since background downloading, and the first game to really show the possibilities of integrating trophies with online gameplay was Warhawk. And despite some great times with that game, the platinum trophy was notoriously difficult to earn due to the slow progression of the game’s ranking system, and a few erroneous ones, such as the trophy that requires seven players to enter a dropship at once, were just ridiculously hard. And unfortunately, the trend has only worsened with other titles over the years. So why do video game developers require multiplayer trophies to count towards 100% completion of a game?

Moixa Adds Convenience to Rechargeable Batteries

July 27, 2010 in News

With such advanced gaming innovations like the PlayStation Move and Microsoft’s Kinect, it’s hard to imagine that consoles like Xbox 360 and Wii still require the use of batteries to power their controllers. Even the use of rechargeable batteries can be a hassle since you constantly have to swap batteries in and out of a charging dock, which itself may only hold up to four batteries at a time. Rechargeable batteries are great since they save time, money and help keep the environment clean, but Moixa’s USBCell adds a new level of convenience to rechargeable batteries.

PS Store Recommendations: More Harm Than Good?

July 27, 2010 in Editorial

PS3′s Firmware 3.41 was released for the sole purpose of activating a PlayStation Store feature called recommendations. When browsing through the details of a particular title, a new section titled “You May Like” becomes visible, and lists additional items based on similar purchase activity of other PSN members who currently own the item you’re viewing. At face value, the feature is beneficial. But if Sony doesn’t exercise caution, both gamers and developers may react negatively to this feature.

Street Fighter X Tekken Dream Teams

July 26, 2010 in Editorial

With the recent announcement of Street Fighter X Tekken at ComicCon, series faithfuls are already undoubtedly rushing to the arcades to scope out the new competition. From the demo shown by Capcom/Namco, the new crossover battles will take place via two-on-two tag matches. Ultras combos, introduced in Street Fighter 4, will be even more deadly as it looks like players will be able to perform tag team Ultras. Though these mechanics are nothing new to crossover titles, it does give the player the ability to form unique teams and match-ups. Only four characters were shown on the demo (Ryu/Chun-Li vs. Kazuya/Nina) so the rest of the roster should be a trending topic from here on out. But until the final cast is announced, here’s a wish list of fantasy teams that yours truly would like to imagine possible upon release.

Sony Caught Overcharging for Horrific PS3 Title

July 26, 2010 in News

Factor 5 may have been a world-renowned developer with a penchant for pushing platforms to their limits, but that didn’t stop them from creating one of the worst games on PS3, Lair. The title suffered from very low sales figures, which should have clued them and Sony in that a price drop was necessary to help reduce their losses on the game. And what’s surprising is that Sony has unwittingly raised the price on this title.

Activision’s crazy kart-racing sim has taken a beating at retail outlets, only managing to sell a handful of units. But judging by the positive responses to the Online Multiplayer Demo, as well my own experiences with the demo, the game still has the potential to become a sales hit if its publisher starts another marketing campaign. But until then, there’s an amazing deal on this game that cuts the price of the PS3 and 360 versions down to just $30.

Midas, Meet Kratos

July 25, 2010 in News

It wasn’t long ago that Ready at Dawn said adios to the PSP platform and happily shipped off their PSP development kits back to Sony. The decision to quit PSP development, especially after releasing two of the platforms best titles back to back, caught the studio’s fans off guard. Though we’d love to tell them to eat some crow after the team got PSP dev kits shipped back to them for God of War: Ghost of Sparta, some recently released footage of Kratos giving King Midas a beating is putting that decision on hold.
